What is air duct cleaning? It is exactly what it states… cleaning out dirt and debris from the duct system.

There are two different methods of air duct cleaning; the right one and the wrong one. Many air duct cleaners today advertise “$99” Air Duct Cleaning and so the story goes. Here’s the deal… no job can be done correctly for $99, $199 or in many cases even $299. Let me suggest a few tips or questions that must be answered when performing an air duct cleaning.

  1. Will both the return and supply trunk be cleaned and at what cost?

  2. Will both the supply and return be brushed and air scrubbed and at what cost?

  3. Will each individual supply branch also be air scrubbed and or brushed?

  4. Will each return be air scrubbed and brushed?

  5. Will the technician use an inspection device to guarantee that all debris has been removed?

  6. Will the return drop be vacuumed?

  7. Will each register be removed and air scrubbed or will the “tech” use only the reverse air sweep method?

With Holland Home Services and Milwaukee Air Duct Cleaning we will do what is right for each and every point listed above. Why? Because it is the only correct way to properly clean air ducts. It may cost you between $500 - $1800 to do the job right.

Why such a price range? Here are the factors that will determine the cost of a properly cleaned duct system.

  1. How large of a home?

  2. Is it a single story or a two story home?

  3. Is there one system, two systems or three systems to clean?

  4. Is the duct work exposed or buried under a finished drywall or drop ceiling?

Is it necessary to have my air ducts cleaned?

This is always a question that must be answered carefully. Many air duct cleaners scam homeowners to believe that having your air ducts cleaned will make your life more worthy. I have even seen some ads that claim your will have less health problems. I don’t necessary believe all this. However, what I do believe is that when you have your air ducts cleaned that there will be less dirt and debris in the system. If there’s less dirt and debris in the system that means that there’s a greater chance it will not get into your lungs. The main reason we want to remove this dirt and debris is to keep it from getting to your filters, blower wheel, heat exchanger and even the evaporator coil. We know that even the slightest amount of dirt and debris build up on a coil or secondary heat exchanger can cause a decrease in performance and efficiency.

Why do air ducts get dirty?

It’s rather simple. The blower in your air handler or furnace is moving air anytime the air conditioner or furnace runs. The dirt and dust in the air will eventually gather in the duct system. Each time the blower cycles on it will pick up some of that dirt and debris and send it to furnace or air handler. During the winter the blower on your system typically operates at a lower speed. This lower speed has a lesser chance of allowing your filter to remove all the dirt and debris. Now along comes summer and air conditioning season. When the air conditioner runs it uses a stronger airflow in order for the cooling system to work properly. This increased air flow will cause much of that dirt and debris that gathered over winter to break loose and get into the filter, blower, and heat exchanger and eventually into the air space.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

That’s your choice. We have some clients that want it done annually and others that go every ten years. What I will say is that anytime you have a new heating or cooling system installed it is essential and should be done at the same time. Let me explain why this is so crucial. The way heating and cooling systems are built today is for efficiency and performance. One major change in HVAC systems are the blowers and the way they work. Many new heating and air conditioning systems have blowers that are much stronger and move more air than your old system did. This stronger blower can take much of the dirt and debris in your system and pull it through your brand new furnace or air handler. I always suggest if you are spending $5000 - $15,000 on a new heating and or air conditioning system why not spend a few extra dollars and get the air ducts cleaned? Then you will know that your system is squeaky clean and ready for old man winter or that hot sticky summer.
